What can you expect?
Lip-reading allows people with hearing impairments to develop a skill that is actually natural to everyone but more readily recognized by those with hearing impairments: reading the words on the speaker’s lips helps them hear and understand the speaker better. Lip-reading is a lot of fun to practice; like any language to be learned, it can be tedious, but it’s also very enjoyable.
The organization “Les Malentendants” offers a formal, structured program that has been in place for many years, based on a course that requires regular weekly practice throughout the academic year.
Benefits?
Another, more societal educational goal is to raise awareness among everyone about speaking more clearly: speaking more distinctly, looking the person with hearing loss in the eye, speaking more slowly, enunciating clearly, and repeating if necessary. This is a quality that everyone should practice with everyone else, in fact. People with hearing impairments bring this obvious truth back to the forefront of our thinking, emphasizing the importance of being present for others and having others be present for us.
